The Smithy, situated
near the peaceful village of Brentor on the edge of Dartmoor, is an ideal base
for walkers and those wishing to enjoy the magnificent moorland, granite tors,
historic remains and wooded valleys of the Dartmoor National Park. The nearby
church of St Michael de Rupe on its tor is a striking landmark and commands
panoramic views towards Dartmoor, Exmoor, Plymouth Sound, Bodmin Moor and Kit
Hill.
The location is also ideal for cyclists as the National Cycle Route 27 ('The
Granite Way') passes through North Brentor and over the 19th century Meldon
Viaduct with its spectacular views and on to the market town of Okehampton.
Nearby Lydford Gorge (National Trust) with its breathtaking Devil's Cauldron
and outstanding White Lady Waterfall is well worth a visit. Refreshments are
available at each end of the gorge. Lydford Castle (English Heritage), a notorious
medieval prison dating back to the 11th Century, offers a fascinating glimpse
into the past. There
are two excellent pubs at Lydford, The Castle and The Dartmoor Inn.
Morwellham Quay, an historic port and copper mine with an award-winning museum
and visitor centre, is also nearby. Ferry
trips up the River Tamar to the picturesque village of Calstock run from Morwellham
Quay.
Nearby National
Trust properties include Cotehele, Buckland Abbey, the home of Sir Francis Drake,
and Finch Foundry at Sticklepath. The
acclaimed Garden House at Yelverton and the Royal Horticultural Society's outstanding
garden at Rosemoor, Great Torrington are both within easy reach.
Roadford Lake (12 miles) offers watersports, fishing and relaxing walks as well
as a visitor centre, shop and cafe.
The market town of Tavistock (6 miles), with its thriving pannier market and fortnightly farmers' market, also has a good shopping centre, post office and supermarkets. The Cathedral City of Exeter and the City of Plymouth with its historic Barbican area and renowned National Marine Aquarium are each about 45 minutes drive away.
The north and south
coasts are within easy reach as are the famous Eden Project and The Lost Gardens
of Heligan (approximately an hour's drive).

1 Lower Tor Cot, situated in the quiet village of Marldon with its ancient church, pubs, shops and post office, is an ideal base for exploring the miles of stunning coastline, beaches and coves of the South Devon coast, known as the English Riviera, and the coastal holiday resorts of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham.
The historic town
of Totnes with its delightful arts and craft shops, restaurants, cafes and weekly
markets is nearby. Totnes has many buildings of historical, architectural or
archaelogical interest including the Norman Castle, the splendid Tudor East
Gate Arch and merchants houses. River boat trips run regularly from Totnes to
Dartmouth and a steam railway runs along a scenic route from Totnes to Buckfastleigh.
The Dartington Cider Press, a visitor and craft centre near Totnes with 15 shops,
eating places and workshops, sells a wide range of goods including quality craft
work, fine foods and Dartington Crystal and is well worth a visit.
The Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway operates regular steam train rides
along the spectacular Torbay coast from Paignton to Kingswear.
Babbacombe Model
Village north of Torquay has minature streets and houses within a garden - beautifully
illuminated after dark.
The town of Dartmouth, beautifully situated at the mouth of the River Dart guarded
by Dartmouth Castle (English Heritage) on one bank and Kingswear Castle on the
opposite bank, has many bistros, restaurants, boutiques, specialist shops and
medieval buildings including the famous Butterwalk and the historic cobbled
Bayard's Cove, featured in The Onedin Line. Dartmouth has a strong maritime
history and is the home of the famous Britannia Royal Naval College.
Compton Castle (National Trust) lies close to the village of Marldon. This impressive
manor house with fortified towers, battlements, buttresses and beautiful gardens
has been the home of the Gilbert family for 600 years.
The ruined and,
reputedly, haunted Berry Pomeroy Castle (English Heritage) is also nearby. The
castle is beautifully situated and has a fascinating history. An audio tour
is available.

From the M5, take the A38. Take the A382 signposted Newton Abbot. When you approach the outskirts of Newton Abbot, follow directions for Totnes A381. At Ipplepen turn left immediately past the Jet garage, signposted Compton. Follow the lanes through Compton to Marldon.
