Family Days Out

Buckland Abbey Estate (NT), once the home of Francis Drake, lies on the outskirts of the village of Milton Combe and offers much to do and see for all the family.

Lydford Gorge (NT) is a great day out for the family with short and long walks along the meandering River Tavy in the deepest gorge in the South West. The White Lady waterfall is a breathtaking sight and the walk over the Devil's Cauldron an exhilarating experience. There are cafes at each end of the gorge.

Lydford Castle (English Heritage), a notorious medieval prison dating back to the 13th Century, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past.

The Tudor house at Cotehele and its large magnificent gardens sweeping down to Cotehele Quay is within easy reach. The Discovery Centre by the Quay tells the story of the Tamar Valley and there is a pleasant walk from the Quay to Cotehele Mill.

Plymouth with its vibrant shopping centre, historic Barbican area, marinas, renowned National Marine Aquarium and the Hoe with its stunning sea views has something for all the family. Plymouth is within easy reach by car or you can take the train which runs from the station at Bere Alston along an outstandingly scenic route to the centre of Plymouth.

The north and south coasts are easily accessible as are the famous Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan (approximately an hour's drive). Polzeath and Widemouth on the north coast are both popular family resorts for surfing and bodyboarding.
